LASSeO proposes that nationwide initiatives to establish standards are to be encouraged, because to have real value, standards must be universal.

Oyster and Barclays team up to offer 'wave and pay'
It has just been announced that a trial is commencing of a new combined chip & PIn and contactless credit card from Barclays (the UK's first) which will also include the Oyster product.
TfL/Transys has been looking for some time to expand the use of Oyster to encompass low-value purchases, and this announcement follows the abandonment of earlier ideas of using an Oyster e-purse. Instead, the Oyster and the credit card purses will be quite distinct.

Can you help?
In addition to surveying
UK-wide local government smartcard application intentions
LASSeO is carrying out a significant programme of identifying and evaluating
topics that can make a difference for UK-wide adoption of common practices and
specifications. This programme has just started with the evaluation of data
field specifications including numbering, naming, addressing, etc and recommendations
are being developed for wider Local Authority use.
We also intend to evaluate the Scottish Improvement Service approach
to Library systems and smartcards for appropriateness within the rest of the
UK and to make recommendations accordingly. The Scottish approach to Leisure
applications interfaces will also be available shortly and will be treated in
the same way.
All of this work is particularly relevant to authorities interested in deploying
4k Mifare cards in a standard way that will allow these cards to be technically
interoperable across local boundaries.
If you as an individual, government department, local authority, trade association,
supplier, etc are interested in helping in any way, please contact the LASSeO
chair, Mick Davies, who will be delighted
to hear from you.

Comments are welcome on this paper that considers areas where additional signposting and guidance on smart card data would be of universal benefit. Initial comments are already posted on the Lasseo Forum - please contribute further.

Local
authorities are encouraged to download, complete and return this short
Questionnaire
This will help provide a local government view of the key drivers, triggers and appropriate technologies for widespread publication that will help both to firm up what LAs need to do, and ease the problems faced by new adopters of the technology. It is thought that this will benefit both supply and customer sides.
Initial results are available here.
